How to Survive Your First Per-Diem Shift at a New Hospital

So you’ve landed a per-diem gig at a new hospital. Congratulations! This is an exciting (and slightly nerve-wracking) time in your nursing career. Here are a few tips on how to make the most of your first per-diem shift at a new hospital.

1. Get there early…actually, really early

When they say to show up 30 minutes before your shift, they aren’t kidding. hospitals are large and confusing places, and it’s going to take you a little while to find your way around. Plus, you want to have time to introduce yourself to the staff and get a feel for the unit before you start your shift. So plan on getting there at least 45 minutes early, if not an hour. Better yet, try to scope out the unit the night before so you have an idea of where things are.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions…lots of them

This is your first day on the job, so it’s completely normal if you feel like you’re in over your head. The best way to combat this feeling is by asking lots of questions. Don’t be shy about asking the nurses on your team where things are or how they prefer things to be done on the unit. We promise, they won’t bite (unless you’re working in labor and delivery, in which case all bets are off).

3. Debrief with your preceptor

At the end of your shift, be sure to spend some time debriefing with your preceptor (the nurse who is assigned to orient you to the unit). This is an opportunity for you to ask questions, get feedback on your performance, and learn about any changes or updates that will be happening on the unit while you’re off duty. It’s also a good time to let your preceptor know if you’re interested in working additional shifts on the unit in the future.

Working your first per-diem shift at a new hospital can be daunting, but it’s also an exciting opportunity to learn and grow as a nurse. By following these simple tips, you can make sure that your first per-diem shift is a success!
